Assessment first

Shockwave should support rehabilitation—not replace it.

Shockwave therapy uses externally applied acoustic pulses over a painful area. It may be considered for selected persistent conditions such as plantar heel pain or Achilles tendinopathy after appropriate assessment and when simpler management has not been enough.

It is not suitable for every diagnosis, and improvement is not guaranteed. We explain the evidence, expected treatment course, possible discomfort, alternatives and the rehabilitation work needed alongside it.

A focused consultation

When shockwave may be discussed

Your pathway

Clear decisions at every stage.

01

Confirm the diagnosis

We first check that the symptom pattern fits a condition for which shockwave may be relevant.

02

Check suitability

Health factors, contraindications, previous care and treatment expectations are reviewed.

03

Deliver treatment

Treatment is applied to the selected area with the dose adjusted to clinical tolerance.

04

Build capacity

Activity changes and progressive rehabilitation remain central to recovery.

Honest, evidence-informed care

Honest expectations about the evidence

NICE reports no major safety concerns for refractory plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy, while also recognising uncertainty in efficacy. We therefore use assessment, consent and outcome review rather than presenting shockwave as a guaranteed cure.

Common questions

Useful answers before you enquire.

Is shockwave the same as an electrical shock?

No. The device delivers mechanical acoustic pulses through the skin; it does not pass an electrical shock through you.

Is it painful?

It can feel uncomfortable. Intensity is adjusted and your response is monitored throughout treatment.

Can I book shockwave without an assessment?

An assessment is required to confirm the diagnosis, check suitability and agree the rehabilitation plan.
